FAQ

What is Cairnica?

Cairnica is an environment for growing Cairnica Trees. A Cairnica Tree is a three-dimensional, time-ordered visualization of families and their relationships to one another. The visualization makes it easy for anybody to see and navigate family relationships regardless of family tree size or user experience.

What else does Cairnica do?

Cairnica is currently a view-only environment. It can be used side by side with other tools to keep you oriented and help you see opportunities in your family tree. We're working to add extended functionality.

What is a GEDCOM and where do I get one?

GEDCOM is a universal file format for genealogy data and the only format we import- for now. If you have your data in another program, you should be able to export a GEDCOM file. If you are just starting your family history, you will need to record your relationships in another program and then export a GEDCOM file.

Tree View

Points on the tree represent families and are ordered vertically by time. There is not significance in horizontal spacing. Labels appear as you get closer to points. The labels show the last names of the parents of the family and the year in which they were married. Lines represent lineage. Blue for male and Red for female. The label of the selected family is shown with a Yellow border.

Navigation and Selection in Tree View

  • Rotate = left click and drag. The selected area will drift to the center of the screen.
  • Pan = click and drag with the middle mouse button. If no middle mouse button, press the space bar then left click and drag.

Reference Family

The persistent label with the Green border is the reference family. The reference family can be set to any family on the tree by right clicking on a point or label and selecting “Set as Reference Family”. Clicking on any other family creates a highlighted line back to the reference family to show how the two families are related.

Data Panel

The data panel appears at the left when a family or individual is selected and shows relevant information. Tiles can be selected to move between individuals and families. Rolling over tiles highlights objects in both the Tree View and The Family Group View.

Family Group View

Families are represented by boxes and individuals are represented by squares and circles. Parents are at the ends and children are ordered in between starting with the oldest closest to the father. Individuals can be shown as a child of one family and as the parent of one or more families. The Green dot in the title bar of the family box shows the lineage to the reference family. The family that was selected in the Tree View is shown in the middle with a Yellow border. The selected family is always shared between views.
